I know the dogs I would eventually love to own...Saluki, Polish Tatra, Australian shepard...but I would never get those dogs until I actually had the space for them. So what breed of dog is good for an aparment? They would get walked, but obviously no back yard. So what is a dog breed that can live fairly well in an apartment setting?

Make sure it is a lower energy dog. A Maltese would be a good choice... they play on demand but are not too demanding... plus they poo little... (hahhahaa)

Good Luck
Past owner of 4 Maltese
Now it is the high energy GSD's

DO NOT LISTEN TO THE PERSON THAT SUGGESTED A BORDER COLLIE!!!!

Any properly bred border collie will NOT be okay with apartment life unless the dog is the center of your world and you go EVERYWHERE else with it and it's only in the apartment to sleep!

I have 2 border collies, a Jack Russell Terrorist, and a Corgi/JRT rescue. I think my little mixed breed Corgi thing is the best apartment dog. You shouldn't worry so much about breed -- you should just go to the shelter and find a dog that's a few months old that seems content to sit there and adore you and be petted. My CorgiX is the best therapy dog and couch dog there is. She wouldn't care if I walked her once a day or once a month, that's just how she is.

I say get a medium-sized dog from the shelter and take it for walks every day.

Don't bother with a specific breed until you have a specific purpose for it (my BCs and JRT and the mutt all do agility).

My BCs and JRT, even though high energy, were fine in an apartment simply because every night after work I'd run them at the nature preserve for a few hour and also take them to agility training and we spent the weekends on big adventures or at competitions.

Border Collies were bred to run SEVENTY FIVE MILES A DAY and, honestly, any reputable breeder will not sell a BC to someone in an apartment, especially not as a first-time BC owner.

Just my two cents from my own experience!

Remember, it's not only the amount of space but also how much time and care you are willing to give. ANY dog, no matter the size, will need your attention. Are you gone at work for hours each day? When you come home, do you go out to the park or plunk yourself down in front of the TV? What is your lifestyle on the weekend? I ask these questions only to make you think about your requirements within an apartment.

Every dog has its own personality regardless of its breed. There are several small/medium size breeds that will fit the bill, be it mixed or purebred. Don't make a hasty decision based off of what you read or what you may have heard about that specific breed. Get to know that puppy for who he is and how he will react with you - or for that matter how they will react without you while you are out of your apartment. As an example: The more needy the personality of that dog, the more he may bark and cause a fit when you are gone for the day. In turn, upsetting your neighbors.

I've got a miniature dachshund, and live in an apartment, and she does great!

Any small breed is good for an apartment. Dachshunds, Chihuahuas, yorkies, just about any small breed.

Just make sure your apartment will allow you to have pets. Use their pet weight limit as a guide. Most apartments set the limit at 25 lbs. I wouldn't go much over that, that's why the toy breeds are perfect.

Just remember though, they love to play outside, and love walks whenever possible.

How about a poodle or a wiener dog. I agree small is better. You could look at the pound. Mixed breeds are great and there are many that need loving homes. I always look at the size of a puppy's feet, the smaller the better. Good Luck

I would suggest Caliver King Charles spainel for a first time dog owner. They are easily trainable, love to please and they don't really bark like there's no tomorrow if you spend enough time with them.

They just need daily brushing and a few chew toys. However, do keep in mind that they known for problems in the heart, ears and hips. If you decided to get one, get a full checkup before getting one home.

i was recently stayed in an apt. where the owner had a border collie and he seemed happy enough. (the dog)

smart, not that big, not that much hair. i'd go with the BC.

below i've put a page where you can learn more about size, habits, etc. etc.

("the living with border collies online pamphlet" is particularly exhaustive)

good luck and hope this helped.

Try a small dog like a cavalier king charles spaniel, but if you want a dog that doesn't shed alot try a beagle.

Good luck!

A good dog to live in an apartment would be a Chihuahua. this would be a great pet because it is small, easy to manage, and doesn't eat that much. This would be a great choice until you move out and get a backyard
