As a child, my former dentist would cut the insides of my cheeks before sticking thru a shot to numb my mouth... on both sides even tho the cavity was only on one. Now those areas have "flapped" or scarred as a mass of tissue. Does anyone know any reason WHY a dentist would do this??

Needless to say, I'm no longer with them.

oh my god..your dentist sounds like a butcher!! i am not a dentist but i have never heard of such treatment - thank goodness you are no longer with them!! my friend is a dental nurse and she would be horrified if i told her your story. injections for fillings always go in the gum and if you have an infection..you are treated with anti-biotics first before any treatment - how awful for you...thank goodness it hasnt put you off of dentists for life!!

My dentist who also treats tons of kids I know tells the kids he has to pinch their cheek.. None of these kids realized ever they were getting a shot. I'm sure your previous dentist was doing the same thing and didn't really cut you. I also have those flaps you are refering to. Everyone does.

E SUMMER,
I'M A DENTIST AND I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS. I CANNOT EVEN THING OF A REASON TO DO THIS UNLESS IT WAS TO DRAIN AN ABCESS. EVEN SO, THE SHOT WOULD BE FIRST BEFORE THE CUT.

No... there's no reason he should have been cutting your cheeks... that's what the needle is for, to get the medication into your body.
