The Church has pondered the suggestion of Limbo for a few hundred years and has decided that it is not a good idea. Limbo was never official doctrine.
Jesus said, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved." (Mark 16:15-16)
For centuries, people have wondered about children who died before they were baptized. The Bible does not explicitly state that they will go to heaven.
Limbo was suggested as the place where unbaptized babies went when they died. This idea was never official Church doctrine and has been rejected.
The Church now says that it is not sure what happens to unbaptized babies when they die but she entrusts them to the mercy of God.
With love in Christ.

It's commonly referred to as "purgatory" not limbo, and it has not been 'abolished,' it's still part of Catholic belief. What's your source for saying it has been abolished???
But c'mon, if one believes that our God is a loving and forgiving god, then why would he think that innocent children and babies would be made to suffer in the afterlife? I think not.
The concept of purgatory is biblical, but like many other things in the Bible, you have to read between the lines, really think about what you're reading and what you already know.
For example in 1 Corinthians 15:29-30 Paul talks about atoning for sins of the dead...the dead can't be in heaven if they still have sin to atone, and they cannot be in hell because there's no atonement there...purgatory is implied.
****added after Mr. M's answer:
with all due respect, most non-catholics use the terms Limbo and Purgatory interchangeably. There has NEVER been ANY official Roman Catholic doctrinal position or teaching in regard to the existence of Limbo.
As for Purgatory, the Church has only two official teachings regarding Purgatory: that it exists, and that our prayers help the souls who are there.
Additionally, I don't consider a link to a blog as credible.

you're soliciting for evidence from something written in basic terms about 2000 years in the past for something that got here about in straightforward words 400 years in the past? that would not truly make a lot sense. The bible says that demons can seem as angels and lie to, yet Mary is a saint and not in any respect an angel. i imagine that ultimately, the evidence is contained in the pudding...err...the sturdy issues which have got here about as a effect. maximum Catholic-approved apparitions have quite a few hundred documented circumstances of surprising healings formerly they're commonplace as authentic. a number of those apparition internet sites, the position human beings make pilgrimages to, have actually 1000's of canes, walkers, and wheelchairs mendacity round because human beings unexpectedly did not favor them anymore. because the bible says, ye shall recognize them by way of their end result. And it sounds like such apparitions may have a large purchase of sturdy end result. edit in - that "spirit" IS someone. that's Mary. yet you're in basic terms the following to argue, so that you do not care, do you? it truly is Y!A. in case you want an entire intensive clarification, attempt a Catholic communicate board. a number of them even in straightforward words enable those with shown credentials answer. yet, back, you're in basic terms the following to argue, so for sure, you received't do this both. edit 2 - nicely, because you do say you care(and the jury's nonetheless out on that), then i need to ask - why does there favor to be a verse that asserts human beings wander round as spirits proper after their lack of life? in this apparitions, Mary isn't wandering round, yet appearing. She isn't a spirit, yet a saint. And it truly is over 1500 years after her lack of life(presented you've self assurance she died in any respect, somewhat than being instantly assumed into heaven). If there replaced right into a verse that stated spirits wandered the earth proper after their lack of life, it nonetheless don't have any relation to Marian apparitions. edit 3 - truly, some human beings except Christ HAVE risen to heaven. all of us recognize this to be authentic because the bible mentions 2 of them via brand call. Enoch is one. the different, I ignore.

and that is why I'm not Catholic. They Change the rules to often. God is unchanging and He never changes His mind. So how can a church that has change rules so many times say that they are the one and only true church of God? It's seems dumb to me!
