A dog’s yawn is more stress related. It can either be a stress response to excitement – like a dog may yawn before going into an agility competition. Or a dog may yawn when it’s stressed in a negative way. It’s a signal that they’re not entirely comfortable - like at the vet’s office. But dogs are like humans, if you’re yawning, they’ll yawn back.

Dogs yawn when they are slightly stressed in the environment. Also when they are feeling like they have to "perform" in some way or when they feel confused or frustrated by the current situation or when a person or a dog places social pressure on them - such as telling by the dog to stay then-"staring" at him with the eye of camera.I this case yawing is a negotiation signals as in: "I am allowing you at the moment."

For the same reason that people do. Almost everyone assumes that we yawn because we are sleepy. Actually, it's a built in mechanism that the body uses to get more oxygen to the brain. It causes us to take a deep breath.

They are tired, bored, nervous, not getting enough oxygen? Probably the same reason humans do. It's a reflex. I sometimes find myself yawning when my dogs do or vice versa.

The same reason humans do; when we/they get tired, we/they take shorter breaths, therefore making us yawn.

According to book The Intelligence of Dogs, by Stanley Coren and here paraphrased, "This is probably one of the most misunderstood dog signals...interpreted by humans as fatigue or boredom, it is actually stress related, tense, anxious, edgy."
