I'm looking for some good job ideas, and they must be "under the table". I'm a single mom, I have a babysitter available but a lack of transportation. I live in a very small town, about 2000 people total and there isn't much work around here at all. What are some ideas to make extra money? No negative comments please.

It's no shame for you to try to keep the government from stealing, through income tax, what little money you earn for you and your young 'uns. Keep your ears open for opportunities. I'd have to say that the best suggestion I've read here is for babysitting at home; as mentioned above, you have to limit the number of children you take on, but it can be a good idea if you want to stay at home with your child(ren). Finding children to babysit is not always the easiest task; you might want to start with friends you know who need people to watch their children. Even if friend already has a daycare selected, you might be able to tempt her (or him) into letting you take care of the child if you can undercut the price on the competition, so to speak.

Another idea that might interest you is a home-based business (I'm not talking about "Work from Home! Earn $5,000 a Month!" type of scams here). Depending on what sort of business you run and what clients you get, you may or may not need to report your income. If, for example, you can sell your quality homemade crafts for cash, you might be able to keep that under the table. If, on the other hand, you get paid in check for helping a business professional write letters, that might not be so easy to hide. It depends on what your skills and interests are, but this might be another idea for you, albeit one that may require some time to build up a decent liveable income.

If your town has a laundromat, you might post there or ask the owner if they need anyone there. I always hate to go, I found someone that does wash by the pound. Don't use them, but it's something.

The stores on Main Street have to have their windows cleaned. Once maybe twice a week.

You can also charge to pick up things for the elderly. Maybe even adult sit. Might want to check with either the local churches or nursing homes and see if you can help out there.

If you have internet connection, look at ebay. Either buy stuff to sell or see if your neighors want you to sell for them.

Think house cleaning and lawn care are the biggest ones that pay cash.

That's lots out there. Just have to keep you ears and eyes open. Post something at the local store.

Don't know how big you are, but something they need help moving stuff at a local warehouse.

Not going to get rich, but a little here and little there can't hurts.

Good luck and stay healthy, mom, the kids need you.

If your small town is anything like the small town I'm from, well you're not going to hide an under-the-table job for very long.

Having said that, how about tutoring? Babysitting? Pet sitting? Catering for special events, like baking for a church related function?

I think you're selling yourself short though. There are many more opportunities out there for you to establish a legitimate business, and allow yourself to give your child(ren) a better life. The only reasons I can think of not to want a real job is because you're getting AFDC (TANF), an illegal immigrant, on disability...and if any of those are the case, I'd try fixing or overcoming your obstacles and then moving forward, living the type of life your child will be proud of!

Hi Mandy,
One of my favorite at home jobs was working for a small business owner of a cleaning company/janitorial service.
During the day I called Doctors' Offices, Hair Dressers, Luncheonettes, and other small stores in my area to ask if they needed someone to do their cleaning at night. Many said they would try him out, he was very professional and did a good job so they hired him to come out once a week or twice a month. Before long I had gotten him a fine list of clients and then his reputation spread and he couldn't take on any more new business. His friend who did landscaping asked me to call around to get him jobs....same thing happened.
I made a commission on each job he did for the first time, and then I got a little one-time 'royalty' for each client who kept him on weekly or monthly. This is a very lucrerative job.
You need to use your own phone and phone book or computer to find prospects. If you want to find a small janitorial service, landscaper, pet groomer or any business you like it is best to look in your weekly neighbhood publication or paper, go to the SERVICES section and just call all the ones who have advertisements. Let them know you can increase their business and gain them a steady clientiel for a fee.
Best Wishes

How about babysitting in your home. You can stay at home and make money. I used to do it years ago and I made really good money. Lots of working moms need a good babysitter. Or even after school care. Its a good way to make some under the table cash.

Ooops this is going to be a negative comment but working under the table is against the law. If you get caught you will be sent to prison and your child will be sent to foster care. But hey at least you won't have to worry about being a single mom any longer right?
