If I were an atheist I would have no interest in attacking believers. As Christians often have doubts is it possible that these people also have doubts in their unbelief? One of the great Christian writers of all time( C.S. Lewis) spent much of his life as an atheist

If their names are written in the Lamb's Book of Life, they will come around. If their names are not, then they are lost. Every human being on this earth knew God before they were even born. Something in all of us still know this and remember Him somewhere deep inside.

What I say:

There are many different reasons for this kind of behavior. Here are some:

1. They find it more than just humorous that Christians believe in "a lie" or a "fairy tale" so absurd to them. They see Christians similar to those deluded by mental diseases to believe in "ridiculous things." Therefore, like a person who would attack a crazy/mentally disabled person just to satisfy their need of feeling higher or better than others. They want to mock Christians for putting faith into things they deem "crazy."

2. Atheists do it because they are bored and want to keep things interesting for them. Controversy, for some, is an addicting thing.

3. They themselves were "attacked." They'd feel the need to fight back and defend their view.

4. They're not attacking form their point of view. They just want to share their belief like a Christian wants to share their faith with a nonbeliever. Some Christians are just sensitive and may call out "FOUL!" when the other player doesn't mean and harm at all.

There are more reasons, I'm sure. But what's important is that Christians should not attack back or atheists will see them as hateful or intolerant.

The majority of non-believers are very passive and don't realize how horribly Christianity has changed our world for the worse. So they keep quiet.

I was that way before November 2004. After that, I had to speak up. I try not to attack but to speak my mind and educate those I feel have done nothing but read the bible and close their mind to science and fact.

Just as I am attacked for merely saying "there is no god," I sometimes lash out when someone calls me ignorant, stupid, heretic, heathen, etc. I tend to get grumpy when Christians make judgement calls about me without knowing anything more about me than I'm an atheist.

If anything, chatting here with religious folks has strengthened my non-belief.

I have no interest in attacking Christians.

I do hold beliefs, just not in God or gods.

I think much of what you mistake for "attack" is people answering your questions or disagreeing with your public truth claims about God that are not backed by evidence.

I gottta love the Christian "Everyone's picking on me" stance. It is creative, and as completely silly as it is in the US, it works.

Ignorance, above all other sins, is the scourge of mankind. Just as the Christian feels the need to evangelize, the Atheist feels the need to educate.

"violently"?

Many christians are so dangerous because they have no doubts whatsoever.

Theists, especially christians, try to control and restrict us based on their views. If all christians stop crusading against science, culture, art, sex and sexuality, religious freedom and such, and stop telling everybody else they're going to be tortured throughout eternity unless they join you, I assure you that you won't encounter nearly as much hostility.

Just reading the replies so far demonstrates my point.

I'm not an atheist, but I empathize - they do it out of self defense, as Christians can be quite obnoxious against anyone different.

PS your thesis ignores that Christians attack atheists more than vice versa... by your logic, that paints Christians as having doubts.

No one can proove whether or not god exists. Therefore we come to this section to debate and give evidence for either side. And you may need to develop thicker skin. And fyi, christians attack everybody. They even attack people within their own religion. Catholics, Protestants, Jehova witnesses.... They can't even agree on the message of christ. And let's not forget the muslim bashing.

Christians just like to feel victimized... it's an excellent defense mechanism to draw attention away from the fact that so many of them are the bullies.

Interesting how christians love to portray themselves as persecuted. Those bronze age middle eastern goat herders tales and legends should not be read to the children, obviously they are traumatizing.
