From what I understand, when writing an academic paper, you should write in the third person (he, she, they) instead of first person (I) or second person (you). I am working on my Master's Degree and except for reflective essays, I always write in the third person. Also, watch out that you don't switch back and forth between past and present tense. Hope that helps. =)

I think "you" is too informal to be used in an academic paper - at least that's what my English teacher tells us.

Technically it should be
When one stealls from others, he is acting immorally.

(or if you're female, you can use she is acting imorally.)
