Our dog is sick from a bug probably contracted from her recent stay at a Petshotel. We went to the vet this morning with some stool sample (results which we do not have yet) and our dog is on Metronidazole in the meantime.
Our dog often plays with our pet rat, licking him through the cage. Or, when he is allowed to play on his cage and stand area, both animals will groom each other.

The rat has not shown any symptoms of being ill. But for now, I will keep them apart. Can the rat get what the dog has??

Sounds like she may have Giardia. Be very careful. Not only can the other pets get it, so can you. Make sure you wash your hands.

The rat can probably get what the dog has if s/he eats the dog's stool (gross, I know but it could happen!). Or eats whatever the dog ate that made her sick. Just make sure you provide plenty of cool water for the dog!! steamed rice also helps for the diarrhea problem...

You have a dog that plays with a pet rat?

You have got to get that on video and send it to animal planet. That is so out there. . .

Dogs eat all kinds of stuff. He could be sick from eating cat-poop or garbage or a dead possum from outside. (in other words, it could be anything).

I don't know if your vet told you that dogs get bugs, but thats not true.

He probably ate something, or licked something he wasn't supposed to.

Diarrhea is not too bad for the most part. Usually what ever it is thats bothering the dog, passes in less than 24 hours.

You'll probably find out. I don't think that any illness from one species won't affect another anymore. We have such close contact with so many things that i would keep the critters apart just to be safe.
