Ten years ago, I asked my family doctor about antidepressants because a psychiatrist I was seeing was going to prescribe a mild one, and he told me: "you're a smart girl and these drugs can have a negative effect on your intelligence, so don't take them." Actually, he was never convinced that I was depressed and told me to just go exercise and it will make me feel better. After years of trying to cope with depression on my own, I found out that I just cannot handle it alone. I need help and I am going to ask for it soon. But if the doctor prescribes antidepressants, will it affect my mental abilities in any way? If so, how? Can some people share their experience with these drugs, please?

I personally feel that if you have a true chemical imbalance and are NOT depressed by environmental factors, that perhaps you need psych meds.
I also do feel that when you take meds while you are a child/teenager, your brain is still developing and the meds can have affect you long term.
When I was a teenager, I took antidepressants and some id help with my symptoms but caused NEW short-term and long term problems.
But you are doing the right thing by seeking help if you cannot handle it....... perhaps try taking antidepressants fora trial period and see how you feel. With any medication, it may have side effects, it may not. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!

You need to find the correct drug for you. Becuase some have weird side affects - moods, weight gain, crankness... But if you find the correct one you will feel like yourself again, and it will hopefully stop any future episodes. Have a doctor monitor and if you have ANY side effects get off ASAP. My mother did not and she stopped taking pills then got really depressed - manic depressive - now she is taking the ones which her body agress with and has not had an episode for over a year!!!!

i think a depressed person has a hard time concentrating and may feel confused, so anti-depressants help them to think more clearly improve their mood and allow them to have a more normal life. in my own experience i am a 51 year old male on meds for over 20 years i use to be pretty good at fixing cars but i seem to be not as good as i was before my mind does feel a little dull at times.i take a low dose of antipsychotic med that effects dopamine in the brain.i have never been that smart but i don't feel like the meds have really effected my original intellegence much. if you take the newer anti-depressants i don't think it will change your basic smarts but if your doctor told you that he must know more than me. good luck to you

I take beproprian and I take all advanced core classes. If anything, antidepressents would help you in school becauce it would help you concentrate and care.

Yes. If you take it for longer time, and increase the dosage. Being a chemical ( giving you an artificial relief ), you may get addicted to it. Take care, good luck.
