Hey. I'm trying to restore my Windows 98 desktop to its factory settings, i.e. manually crash my computer. (I have the a recovery disk that can restore my settings.) How can I do this? I tried the "regedit" thing that people recommend all over the internet, but I couldn't figure out how to work that. Help, please.

Use Win98 to create a startup disk. Go to Start, settings, control panel, add/remove programs, then create disk on 'startup disk' tab. Restart the PC, and choose the option Start Pc without cd-rom support. insert the floppy disk. At command prompt, type fdisk, then press enter.Follow the options on screen. Enable large drive support. Then go through with the prompts. The drive will be formatted but takes some time because of its size. Then put in your Windows 98 disc and follow the prompts to install. Also read the source from microsoft if you want full detail or print it out first. Ensure you have all cds of drivers, video card, motherboard etc. before formatting otherwise, your PC won't be completely rebuilt.

Oh I used to do this all of the time, but I had a CD that HP gave to me that if I put it in before restart, you could select an option to 'restart' the computer.

Here is a site that might help you : http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-5035252.html

Or try this:
1) At startup, press F8
2) Select "Run in DOS"
3) Once in DOS, type "C:/format" or "fromat c:/"
4) Restart, with Win 98 CD in Drive
5) Reinstall Windows 98

Its been a while since I have done something like this, but I do remember that you can do it by sticking the WINDOWS 98 CD in the drive before it boots up (not just the HP one).

Hope you have luck! Sorry I can't help you out more, been on the XP for 2 years now...

Go to this link and research. Win98 is no longer supported by Microsoft so I hope you find what you are looking for here.
