First off, make sure your car is truely running hot. Volvo had a bad run of temp sensors that would give false readings. The temp sensor is located in the thermostat housing right next to the power steering resevoir. If you change your thermostat, change the temp sensor at the same time. Make sure your cooling fans are working. They should cycle on when the guage shows hot. The radiator can be checked with a laser temp gun. With the engine at running temp a technician can use it to determine if the coolant is flowing properly.

How hot is hot, normal running temp for that engine is about 218 to 221 degrees farenheit. If it runs to cool it will effect fuel injection rate,if runs hotter than temps mentioned check for plugged rad or electric fan motor thats partially seized
