What kind of discounts? Grocery, utilities, housing, all of the above. What state are you in? I would go to your local Welfare office, ask about food stamps, low cost housing ,medical insurance. I've got some good info. Too much to list here, feel free to email me msmaryanne1@yahoo.com . I didn't see the "gas" part. Heating gas? Know about that.

In California, if you're receiving public aid, you may qualify for a Transportation Stipend. Look into what requirements you may have to satisfy, such as looking for work or going to school.
You may wish to advocate for yourself in situations where there are fees involved, asking, "do you offer scholarships?"
