With Behavioral therapy children can benefit by improving communication, learning, adaptive behavior, and appropriate social behavior.

There is strong evidence that these interventions are most effective when started early, typically in the preschool years.

Cho Seung-Hui obviously did not even receive proper intervention w/ treatment and therapies

There are various classifications and degrees of autism and may go unrecognized, especially in mildly affected children or when more debilitating handicaps mask it.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are a group of developmental disabilities defined by significant impairments in social interaction and communication and the presence of unusual behaviors and interests. Many people with ASDs also have unusual ways of learning, paying attention, or reacting to different sensations.

The thinking and learning abilities of people with ASDs can vary – from gifted to severely challenged. ASD begins before the age of three and lasts throughout a person's life. It occurs in all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups and is four times more likely to occur in boys than girls.

As far as we know, there is no known evidence that Cho Seung-Hui was even Autistic.

If he was autistic he most likely had Asperger’s syndrome which is a form of autism.

If Cho was autistic, it was not a significant part of the equation, except that maybe signs of his mental illness were written off as symptoms of autism by family who desparetly wanted to believe nothing was really wrong.

So either he was misdiagnosed as autistic by a family in denial of his mental problems, or he was autistic AND mentally ill.

Either way, denial kept this boy from getting the help he needed. Now many families are shattered, including Cho's.

Q. - Great info about autism, but Not really addressing the question. Do you do you really think untreated autism leads to mass murders? Cho was mentally ill. He needed much more treatment than anything for autism could provide.

Autism certainly wasn't the problem here, to be sure. He could have been autistic but here is something to think about:
"On December 13, 2005, Cho was temporarily involuntarily committed for a psychiatric assessment, as he was suspected to be mentally ill and a danger to himself or others by a Montgomery County, Virginia district court. Virginia Special Justice Paul Barnett certified in an order that Cho "[presented] an imminent danger to himself as a result of mental illness," and directed that as a "Court-ordered Out-Patient he follow all recommended treatments.""

He somehow ended up in the state psych system. He had a court date before a judge (psych magistrate) who decided that he was a threat to himself, and should seek *OUTPATIENT* care. (problem 1) Likely, he should have gotten further inpatient care, threat to yourself is a criteria for being involuntarily hospitalized in a psych ward. That makes no sense to me, especially after having spent time at the county psych hospital.

(problem 2) A more generalized debate, if you have a psych history of being *committed* as an adult, and determined to be a danger to yourself, should you be able to stroll out and buy a handgun? (apparently the answer is no, in Va anyway)

Yes.
Too many people nowadays are on the Ridalin bandwagon trying to find a quick diagnosis for what is ailing their kids. Parents are too busy with their careers to find out they need to pay attention to their children and find out what their needs truly are. I'm tired of kids being diagnosed for ADD and other so called "illness labels" that puts their kids on all kinds of pills that they don't need.

What ever happened to ordinary discipline?

The VT shooter needed help in every way possible and of course, he slipped through the cracks. With the high stress levels that parents give their children to succeed, they overlook the creativity that gives their children wings to live.
