Military wide.

TDY = Temporary Duty

sometimes refer to as

TAD = Temporary Additional Duty

During my time in the Navy (1985-1999) we called it TAD (Temporary Assigned Duty).

ANYTHING other than a permanent duty station was TAD... schools after boot, schools when you got to your command...

I THINK the folks in Personnel started labelling it TDY in the mid-90's

Its a military term used by all the services. Basically it means temporary duty and can be found in the Joint Federal Tavel Regulations (JFTR).
