I believe Paul spoke very clearly about this subject on several occasions. One such occasion is 1 Cor 3:14-15
"If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames."
Relying on "Works" to be saved is not scriptural, how then could the thief on the cross, simply profess his belief in Christ Jesus and be told by Jesus "This day you will be with me in paradise?" This thief did no works, rather, he led a life of crime and at the last moment of his life, he was found righteous by God because of his Faith in Jesus. He was never even baptised, it was faith alone that saved him.
Rev 3:5-6 says: "He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out his name from the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my father and His angels."
Col 2:8 "See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ."
Eph 2:8-9 "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith -- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God -- not by works, so that no one can boast."
Gal 5:4 "You who are trying to be justified by law, have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace."
Don't listen to what others tell you the bible says: Look for yourself and see what God says.
God Bless You...Peace.

This is such a good question - once we get rid of the notion people decide to become saved. Salvation, my friend, is all from God - he decides who, not us. Another misconception I would like to address at the outset is the notion that we have to earn our salvation. No-one can earn salvation. That idea does not appear anywhere in my Bible, although I believe the Douay version is significantly different in some respects. If anyone can quote scripture to say we have to earn our salvation by good words and deeds, I have yet to see it.
Fish & Martin C are absolutely right about soteriology being Calvinistic. Fortunately, I have to hand a book entitled 'The Five Points of Calvinism' (established to reject Arminianism by the Synod of Dort). It's pretty heavy going, so let me skip to the relevant bit to give you an insight into this question of salvation.
Point 2 - Unconditional Election:
(A) God has an elect people whom He predestined to salvation and thus to eternal life.
(B) Faith and good works are the result, not the cause of God's choice.
(C) Election is not salvation but is unto salvation. Those chosen unto salvation are not saved until they are regenerated by the Spirit and justified by faith in Christ.
(D) Election was based on the sovereign, distinguishing mercy of Almighty God. It was not man's will but God's will that determined which sinners would be shown mercy and saved.
(E) The doctrine of election is but a part of the much broader Biblical doctrine of God's absolute sovereignty.
Election itself saves no one. Election marks out particular sinners for salvation. Those chosen by the Father and given to the Son have to be redeemed if they are to be saved.
theBerean puts this very well. Hope you find this helpful. If nothing else, you now have the authorised view of this, the second of the five points of Calvinism.

Some people point to Revelation 3:5 as “proof” that a person can lose his salvation. However, the promise of Revelation 3:5 is clearly that the Lord will not erase a name: “He who overcomes . . . I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life.” An overcomer is one who is victorious over the temptations, trials, and evils of this world—in other words, one who is redeemed. The saved are written in God’s registry and have the promise of eternal security.

Good question. Of course you can lose your salvation if you do not stay connected to the Vine (Jesus) who is the source of life. This concept is clearly presented throughout Scripture. People who follow the doctrine of once saved always saved are in very grave danger. I believe that particular doctrine will end up sending more people to hell than anything else satan could come up with. Paul wrote to the Galatians Church about "backsliding" - he made the statement .... until Christ be formed in you AGAIN. You can't have an "AGAIN" unless something was there at one time and then was not there and had to be reformed. But for some reason people miss this obvious Scriptural truth all the time. It is a very great danger to believe you can never backslide no matter what you do and I'm glad you brought it up. Thanks!

If a person is really a Christian, then you cant lose your salvation.(All that the Father gives me will come to Me. And He who comes to Me, I will in NO WAY cast out. John 6:37) A Christian is someone who has been "born again" into the family of God. Period. This whole idea of "how many times can a christian sin before losing their salvation" is a red herring. If it was possible to lose ETERNAL salvation, then just ONE sin after having been saved would do it. But Jesus "ever lives to make intersession for us". Now, as to the "Book of Life". I think its highly probable that EVERYONE that has ever been born starts off with their name written in the Book of Life. But once a line has been crossed in a persons life, and Gods offer of Grace has been repeatedly rejected, (only God knows where that "line" is in each persons life) then God, in effect, "hardens" that persons heart and THEY are the ones who actually reject His Love. God just makes it "official" and blots their name out of the Book. He, in effect, gives them what they want. Separation from Him for all eternity.....theBerean

Wow, just wow. If you believe that salvation (soteriology) is representative of "deciding to become saved" and asking God to come into your heart, I would say you might want to rethink attacking Calvinistic Doctrine (Preservation of Saints). You didn't even get the basic understanding of "Decision Theology" correct, which appears what you tried to explain.
How do you reconcile
John 20:31
"but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name."
Romans 10:17
"So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ."
John 15:16
"You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide,"
with your comment "once you have decided to become saved?"
It might sound like I am coming down hard on you, but you really do need to clean up the first sentence in your question.
I must say that I am not a Calvinist and I do not believe in the Preservation of the Saints in the terms that the Calvinists confess (see 1 Corinthians 10:12)

That is a doctrine of MANY denominations today. That's NOT the doctrine of the Lord's church.
The bible is right. One CAN lose his salvation. We must be careful "lest we fall". We must "fight a GOOD fight".
Consider the admonition of Peter: (Does He sound like once you're saved, you're always saved? People are going to, in that day, answer to this doctrinal lie from satan himself)
"For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.
While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.
For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.
But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire." II Peter 18-22
One must "endure until the end", until the "race is won".

You cannot just declare Jesus your savior.
You have TRULY and honestly in your heart believe that Jesus died for your sins. God knows your heart. IF you accept Jesus as savior for the right reasons, the Holy Spirit comes to live within you and you will be convicted any time you sin (NOT ONE PERSON IS PERFECT) and you will repent and want to do what is right...and further you will WANT to do good works for your Lord and Savior. You will WANT to tell everyone how wonderful He is and How they can be saved. AND you WILL. Not because you were told you HAVE to...but because you WANT to. That is a true Christian, temple of God, house of the Holy Spirit.
Obviously if you do not TRULY believe this when announcing Jesus is your savior, you will still be able to fall off the bandwagon because your heart is not in it.

Yes !!!
"He will blot you out of the Book" "I will only strive so long with a man"
Sorry but, YES you CAN and Some DO loose their Salvation - So Very Sad!
I Know that other Christians will disagree with me - but, it IS IN THE WORD! KJV Bible. As for me, I can't argue with 'That'.
Be at Peace!

If you are referring to verse 3:5...
Revelation 3:5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.
Jesus says that He will NOT blot out the names of those who overcome, and those who will overcome are found in this passage.
1 John 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. 5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
Everyone who is born again will overcome and be saved.
If you are referring to this verse...
Revelation 22:19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
...then it is understood by those of faith that no true child of God would do such a thing and this verse is meant as a dire warning that would only be inflicted upon a mere professor of faith and would in no instance ever be applicable to one in whom the Holy Spirit of God dwelt.
