We're all aware of the negative things Christianity has been responsible for: crusades, inquisitions, witch hunting, anti-semitism, anti-science, creationism, etc. However, I'm sure there were some good things Christianity brought to humanity. I don't mean something akin to "Well, a Christian invented sunglasses." That's like saying since a racist helped write the Declaration of Independence, we should be thankful for racism itself.
BTW, I ask this to atheists because--ironically yet understandably--the average atheist seems to know more about Christianity than the person who has to believe it.

The Church has sponsored a lot of great artists and musicians. Kind of limited the themes, however.

That is more a result of teh great wealth of the Church and not the religion itself. Probably most of the things coming to mind have to do with the social structure and power of the church, not the religion. Even charity - people tend to be charitible, and Christianity encourages that but so do a lot of other religions. And if there were no religions, people would probably have another social structure to work their charity through. I mean, the secular US government spends a lot more on charity than churches in this country.

OK, how about Hot Cross Buns?

It's helped pay artists and composers for centuries. Undeniably, a lot of great classical music was paid for by churches.

It also has given many people who have lost hope the will to go on. (For example, prisoners, addicts, etc...)

But just because it has done some good things in the past doesn't mean it is true. Many Christians seem to forget that.

Oh, and the sunglasses didn't hurt either. ;p

you're proper in saying that Christianity developed. All variations with existence going ahead. I do trust that in the present day's global is extra helpful off if human beings trust in something solid, and if that solid is proficient to them by faith - no situation. in spite of the truth that, i grow to be an atheist for the most of my existence - i will relate to that we not in any respect quite had new advancements on argument. i grow to be continuously inquiring human being, so it genuinely led me to my personal research into faith, and in spite of the truth that i'm no longer a Christian, yet a theist now, respecting beliefs of others, because previous 'no-afterlife and no-god' arguments in basic terms did not stand for me anymore. Theism is logical, no count number number how a lot every person denies it.

Give me some time, this is a hard question. I have been told by several christians that if it wasn't for their belief in christianity they would immediately go out and rape and kill people but I was never quite sure what to make of that. I was just glad I didn't live close to them.

I know one thing , Christianity has probably helped to prevent the spread of islam.

Well to be fair, since the crusades, inquisitions, witch hunting, anti-semitism, anti-science, is not in Scripture, it cannot literally be viewed as "Christian." After all, what is more Christian, what Jesus taught? Or what people have done that have come in his name?

Jesus himself said that people would come in his name and NOT do what he did.

Christ has brought light and salvation to the world and if you devalue that, then you are not worthy of it in this life or the life to come.

Printing, the bible need to printed somehow... However there is nothing to gain anymore however from the archaic pracrice called religion, only objectivity and negatives.

And for all those people who will quote famous christians from the past, EVERYONE was religious and therefore most innovators were religious.... It has to be directly related to the church,(my bible answer, tinted windows, "architecture" etc)

I like the Byzantine artwork, y'know, all that stained glass and such. Also, some of the old cathedrals are truly amazing works of art.
