Hey -- I'm a teenager and I'm going to Austrlia for a year.. I was just wondering about drinking there. Do people frown upon it or what? Cause I know in other countries teens just walk in to clubs and can buy it in the stores.. So I was just wondering how it is there? Because I do like to go out and party and will be very dissapointed if my year is not filled with that.

The drinking age in Australia is 18. If you are over 18 you can drink anywhere. If you look young, you might need some ID to prove you are 18.

If you are under 18 it is illegal to drink or for anyone to sell you alcohol or for anyone to buy it for you. Many underage people do drink but you will be in trouble if you are caught.

As people have said 18 is the legal drinking age here. It's illegal to buy alcohol under 18 but not specifically illegal to drink it. You need to have your legal guardian present with you if you are drinking under the age of 18, given you're only here for a year, I doubt that will happen.
If you're over 18, there aren't any problem with going to any places that sell liquor. Make sure you have some form of ID - Driver's Licence, Passport, etc. (Learner Drivers Licence isn't leagally accepted but many bouncers make leeway if they see you are over 18. I don't drive so I have to use and alternative ID and most are ok with that but some places wont accept it. You can get an over18 card but unless you can prove you're a permanent resident, you can't get one I don't think.)

Hi,
18 years of age is the legal age at which one can purchase and consume alcohol in Australia. Australia has a culture of beer swilling and hard drinking. It is the norm. Nightlife is fantastic and plentiful. Island life is one big party!! Enjoy and , in advance, Welcome to Oz! yours Cybersurfa

Just want to point out that you need photo ID confirming you are of age. If you just use a student card it might be knocked back as most student cards don't have your date of birth.

If you take your passport keep it very safe!

Have fun and stay safe.

You have to be 18. You'll get into some pubs but you might get kicked out if they realize you're underage. Once you are 18 thought, you'll have a great time!

I believe, like here in NZ (where the drinking age is also 18), the drink culture is pretty alcohol friendly...ie binge drinking unfortunately is getting out of hand....so I guess its good for you, bad for your liver, brain and other people...
