There was a Shunnamite women during the days of Elijah who had a room built on to her house just for the prophet. Elijah through the power of God raised her son from the dead. Also, he warned her that a famine was coming for 7 years and to leave until it passes. When she came back after those 7 years, the king restored her property back to her plus 7 times what it would have yielded during the time she was gone. Yes. The preacher should be supported. Usually it is cheaper to provide a parsonage rather than pay rent or provide housing otherwise.

In the Old Testament you could argue Levitical laws cover this practice. But, New Testament leans towards a prophet is worth their keep and thus open to the individual religions.
