Ignore all of the above answers except the guy who suggested Glenlivet. Dewars, Cutty Sark, Famous Grouse, Johnny Walker, and Chivas Regal are all examples of something called blended Scotch. That is, it's barley-malt Scotch whiskeys cut with cheap neutral grain spirits. Kinda like how Budweiser cuts its barley mash with corn and rice to save money. They all taste like hell and are WAY overrated.
What you'll want is something called "single malt Scotch." Single malt Scotches are made from pure barley malt alone. If it doesn't say "single malt" on the bottle, it is simply not worth your time or money.
Now with that out of the way, the kind of single malts that you'll find in your local liquor store will mostly be of the Speyside variety. They are good, clean, smooth, slightly sweet, and not too peatey. (Peatiness is the distinctive quality of Scotch. It comes from roasting the malted grain over a peat fire, which imparts a smokiness to the drink.) Glenlivet 12 year, Glenfiddich 12 year, and Glenmorangie 12 year are all good entry-level Scotches. They're not too expensive and give you a good survey of what you're getting into. Save the older Scotches and the fancy finishes for later on, when you have more money and are certain you'll know that you'll appreciate them.

Well, I'm not a Scotch drinker, but one of my best friends is, and he drinks Dewars. It is fairly expensive, but he seems to like it. I've tried some Irish whiskies ( I know that's a different thing ) but those are good *sipping* drinks. I personally have tried : Cutty Sark, and Dewars. But I'm more of a Pinot Grigio girl, not a Scotch drinking person. Hopefully, you'll find some good answers here that will hit the spot! Good luck!

I think one of the lightest mid priced is J&B. Dewars is good. Any single malt, though more expensive. For a really cheap scotch that sorta passes try Clan McGregor.
