The Phelps family are devout homophobes. I understand the religious basis for their beliefs, but how can they consider themselves true Christians while deliberately spouting vitriol? they constantly used the word "f**" in a way that made it obvious that it was an insult. It was so upsetting that i cried. How can Christians preach hate to the world? Does God really believe that "f**s" are worthy of death? That totally doesnt fit into my idea of a loving, caring God. I'm not even gay and i was horribly insulted by their narrow beliefs. I just dont understand how anyone could be so truly hateful in their hearts and still call themselves Christian.

That's a question that a lot of us Christians have been asking ourselves ever since this bunch of "media hounds posing as Christians" grabbed national attention. Christ was very specific when He commanded us to "Love one another as I have loved you."

He didn't add any disclaimers or qualifiers of any sort about the kinds of people it was acceptable to hate. Apparently Fred Phelphs and his obscene ilk think that they are greater than the Lord Whose Name they are shaming.

I agree with you. I felt SO horrible while I was watching the Tyra Show yesterday. I, myself am a Christian but I don't agree with anything that comes out of that family's mouth. How can they use the word f*g in such a negative way? Christians are supposed to love each other no matter what but they are FULL OF HATRED. They aren't Christians, they're more like devils. They looked so evil as they were saying that all gay people are going to Hell. Some people are just born a certain way and they can't change it about themselves. They're being true to themselves, the way God created them. The family makes Christians seem like hateful people.

On the other hand, when Tyra wore that outfit that one of her guests picked out for her and was answering the audiences' questions, she was so hilarious!

That family is just full of hate, which has probably been pasted down generation after generation. I feel sorry for them. God is love, how can they say that they are Godly people when they speak such hateful things. Personally I'm not religious, I'm spiritual, I believe that God is a spirit and he/she views us as a spirit. God doesn't see gender, race, religion or any other label or physically attribute, he/she only sees a spirit. So God doesn't care if two spirits who happen to have the same sexual organisms love each and choose to be together.

A lot of people call themselves Christian and don't have any evidence of it in their lives. The Bible says that the world will know we are Christians by our love. We will bear the fruit of having Jesus in our hearts. There are many many people that do not show the fruit, but still call themselves Christian. There's no law requiring proof of religion when you talk on tv. The Phelps are an overly deceived bunch that is trying their hardest to give God a bad name. God does not hate homosexuals.

I grew up in church and believed in God. When I was 19 I found myself being attracted to girls and I hated how I felt. I spent 8 years seeking God's help. I saw His love for me in incredible ways. Through this struggle He brought me into His Kingdom and changed me into a much more healthy and productive person. That love is what brought me my freedom. I am here to spread that word. God loves gay people enough to set them free!! There is no hate in God except for toward sin. He hates sin because sin hurts His children.

Actually didn't see it. What was it, another attempt by the secular media to portray Christians in the most negative way possible? Sounds about right. When do you ever see anything about the millions of Christians who aren't filled with hate? Anything you see about Christians on television is going to be the absolute worst examples of behavior. It's ashamed people capitalize on such shameful attitudes and lead people to believe they represent Christianity as a whole.

I know - it can be really hard to see people be so full of hate while preaching about God. You gotta keep in mind though, that for each of these nuts, there are a hundred thousand good, "normal" Christians, filled with love. Every group of people have their marginal communities, and I guess this goes to prove that Christians do, too.

Fairly easily and for many reasons. Christians haven't been exactly nice throughout history, see the Crusades. I am Christian myself, but I think too many people use religion in general as a way to justify their platform against various groups/philosphies that they are against. I think people should read religious writings and decide for themselves what is right, not what others say is right.

I just visited their website and I too felt very sad. I don't mean it in a condescending way---I truly felt such a sadness that they represent Christianity so poorly. The Diane Whipple site made me very sad, because all I could think of was that they gloried in her painful death and took evil joy in demeaning her mother. What grief if any of her family see this. What desolation they feel that their loved one is dead, but what horror to see someone take pleasure in her pain. They are not Christians.

I saw that and I am speechless. Never have I seen such a case of double standards and hatred from "Christians." They are a poster family for how NOT to be a Christian. It didn't seem as if anyone could get them to even listem to any other thoughts, then their own. It was sad and made me angry.
