Confession is important. Yes, to a priest. Christ set it up that way.
Book of James 5:15-16 - in verse 15 we see that sins are forgiven by the priests in the sacrament of the sick. This is another example of man's authority to forgive sins on earth. Confession is Wednesday and Saturday at our Church. Doing penance means I can receive the Eucharist on Sunday with a clear conscience and a clean heart.

I do admit that I am flawed and that I make mistakes and that I am not as good as I should be.
When I have harmed other people I try to apologize and learn from my mistakes and do better next time. Sometimes I am successful at this - sometimes I am not.
I think I prefer taking personal responsibility to your suggestion - but go ahead if it seems right to you.

I don't have to confess my sins to a priest. When I do my confessing, I talk directly with God, that's all I need.

You are not a sinner. God is within you and you are never separate from God. No one need confess anything to a third party. God does not judge; God only teaches. The only renewer and refresher is Nature, which is also God. Blessed be.
