I have just finished reading a book, and the main character was from a Mormon family. I was wondering what exactly deifnes a "mormon" and if it is true that the men in the Mormon society are looked to as better than women. If so, then why?

I am not trying to offend anyone, I am just genuinely wondering.

Thanks!

Mormons are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. aka the "mormon church".

Men are not looked to as better than women, but rather equal, but with very different roles to fill.

If anything, women may be elevated above men in many eyes within the church.

It is true that men hold the priesthood, however the priesthood is something that is used exclusivly to serve others. Men and women can each serve.

Basically a man can not recieve exhalatation (highest degree of glory) without being married, and same goes for a women. We need eachother! I think people say our religion treats women as second class citizens because 1) Men recieve the priesthood, not women. Yet as a women I recieve the priesthood blessings because of my husband, and I am so proud of him.
2) Our church values family and believes that both men and women have important and sacred roles. That of the women is motherhood, which I believe to be absolutely true. If men were as good as we are with children then they would have the breasts :D Also many Mormon women choose to stay home to be with their families. Even if I hadn't converted to LDS I would stay home with my daughter, I am a firm believer of stay at home mommies!
People who say men are valued more are ignorant, I have never ever felt less valued then any man.

PS Most LDS men love their wives and show more respect for them then I have seen most other men do.

I am Mormon, and there are a lot of misconceptions about what we believe. Unfortunately, I have to admit that much of it is because of the way many of the members themselves behave.

No, men are not viewed as more important than women. Just like other religions, you really have to look at what the religion teaches and not necessarily how the members act. There are many who are guilty of "unrighteous dominion" which would be things like intimidation, spousal abuse, etc. These are not the teachings of the church and are very frowned upon. But, that doesn't stop people from doing it.

The church teaches the teachings and acts of Jesus Christ. In John 19, the Savior sets a great example when, during his crucifixion, he makes certain that his mother will be taken care of by John. In Ephesians 5, the apostle Paul taught that the husband is the head of the wife "even as Christ is the head of the church". How did Christ lead the church? With love, caring, and compassion. Then two verses later, the Bible states "Husbands love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church". I hope this makes sense.

Good luck with your question. Hope this helps!

Mormon is just a nickname for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (also LDS). It is NOT true that men are looked as better then women. I myself am an LDS woman and I have never felt they are better than me, they just are able to hold the priesthood. Women recieve very good treatment and gain blessings from worthy men who hold the priesthood. Hope you understand what I mean! :)

I'm Mormon. That's kinda funny... Because when I was young I thought women were the special ones in my church because I had to treat them with so much respect. I understand now that they deserve it!

If anyone is better in the LDS faith it's the women. But, we have equal yet different roles. Why don't you ask LDS women? Don't believe people who don't understand us.

Have a great day! :)

The notion of a superiority of sexes is derived from the teaching that all males over 12 hold a 'lay' priesthood, which implies a type of religious hierarchy. Women are expected to be wives and mothers, and are told that this is a 'sacred' calling although they cannot hold any authoritative position in the church.

The President and current prophet of the church spoke recently at the General Conference stating "Husbands, love and treasure your wives. They are your most precious 'possessions'. This gives you some idea of how women are perceived.

Whether or not this is truely god's word is the topic of endless debate.

No, men are not considered better, men and women must work together, they are equal partners, each with their own unique abilities.

"Mormon" is a nick name given to members of the Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-day Saints, because of their belief that the Book of Mormon is the word of God, like the Bible.

i've got spent approximately 40 years in bishoprics, intense councils, and clerk positions, and that i've got considered various human beings bypass away the Church. i've got sat on various disciplinary councils. None of them left the Church because of the fact of "information" against the Church. There are some who basically progressively waft away into state of being inactive. now and lower back this is because of the fact of a loss of religion, led to by doubts led to by some thing they have examine. considered one of my brothers became like that, besides the reality that he has on condition that come back to Church. He did no longer desire to tell me approximately his doubts because of the fact he had replace into confident that there became no answer to his doubts, and he did no longer desire to burden me along with his doubts. this is basically too undesirable he did no longer communicate with me, because of the fact there is often an answer. part of his difficulty nevertheless became that he became searching for a reason to no longer bypass on a challenge, and "blindly" persist with the occasion of his older brothers. It became in part a delight subject. I truthfully have a theory approximately people who bypass away the Church and declare it became because of the fact of information. They fall into 3 communities. (a million) some are somewhat perplexed by the arguments of adult males. (2) some seem for information the Church isn't authentic, yet deep down they be attentive to the real reason became they have been indignant or they felt accountable approximately their sins. (3) And others do no longer understand their very own reasons. In a psychology classification I as quickly as took I heard of a fascinating test bearing directly to this 0.33 team. a man or woman in yet another psychology classification became hypnotized and given a submit-hypnotic advice. The hypnotized scholar became instructed that when the instructor coughed the scholar could arise from his seat and open the window to the lecture room. He does no longer undergo in recommendations something he became instructed while hypnotized. He became then awaken from his hypnotic trance and instructed to bypass lower back to his seat. the scholar remembered no longer something of what he became instructed at the same time as hypnotized. the instructor after a couple of minutes coughed, and the scholar have been given up and opened the window. Now right this is the factor of this tale. while asked why he opened the window his recommendations right this moment synthetic a reason. He stated he became warm, and unusually adequate his physique proved it by getting crimson and sweaty.

The Mormon religion is as much a cult as the rest of the male dominated religions in the world, who belittle the roles of women. I am a man myself and have always wondered why religions have never given women their rightful place in the eyes of god in heaven. Without women, there wouldn't be "men....," despite how Judaism put Adam first and Eve second. Ironic how the ancient hebrews viewed men as "dirt...." Many, not ALL, act as though they are superior in religions, yet over the course of their leaderships, the world is just as much a screwed up mess as it was in the beginning........I say, let women run things for awhile........By the way, I was married to a moron, oops, "mormon" for seven years and there is nothing "unique" about them for they are just as ignorant as the rest............as to "who" God in heaven "is."
