Well a Rube Golgerg machine is basically a machine that makes something simple complicated. So first you need to decide on something that seams simple and then use levers and pulleys to move force from one object to an other. You must also know that once you have started the machine you shouldn't need to do very much if any thing to it to get it to work.

Rube Goldberg never built anything. He was a cartoonist who drew outlandishly complicated devices working one after the other to accomplish a simple task. There is a rube Goldberg web site if you want to look at a few examples of his humor.
Each of his devices has some element of one of the simple machines being employed as well as the procilvities of certain animals to behave certain ways.
I do not know what you were told to build, but the web site will give you some ideas and a few laughs.

The old "Mouse Trap" game was an RG machine.
So, I guess you could go to the toy store and buy one.
