They are called stirrups. I found them very helpful inboth of my vaginal deliveries to push against and create the counter pressure that I needed to get the babies out. I personally don't do well with having my legs held . I needed to push against something. These are definitely NOT for everyone but you do what is comfortable for you.

I like the first answer (unnecessary), but the answer is "stirrups" (like on a saddle of a horse).
