By all means if you cannot be a good Christian then be a good person. It is the same thing.

With all due respect, and no offense intended, I would trust more a good person than a good Christian. Being the second, doesn't necessarily means the same as the first.
I live in a very devout Christian community, where I am the only Pagan, and I see how my neighbors get along among themselves. So much hate and jealousy; so much gossip and slander. But they all like me not because I am better than any of them, (because I am not), but because I respect them and I only ask to be respected in the same manner.
It is so good to have so many Christian friends, but I feel sad that I have to mediate in their disputes. Ironic, isn't it?

What difference would it make?
Abel was a good person and God did not protect him from being killed by his brother.
Jesus was a good Jew (even though the Christians say he was the 1st Christian...i give them that) also he was god's "only begotten son" and god did not save his @$$ either.
We live and die no matter what and good people come in all form and are not bouned by religion, race, size, whatever. Living peaceful gives most a longer stay on this planet thus we should make the be use of our short time & enjoy what it offers.

As a Christian (and how many answers do I give beginning with that disclaimer?), I'd have to say that being a good person is far more important. What you happen to believe about metaphysics and the next life is ultimately irrelevant; the kind of moral relationships you enter into with other people in *this* life is what matters. we cannot know for certain what will happen to us after we die, but we can know how we ought to behave towards one another here and now. Worry less about the world to come, and more about behaving ethically towards others here. I would suggest that - whatever (if anything) comes after this life - this is a good preparation for it.

It's better to be a good person. If someone tells me that you're a good Christian then all I know is that you follow the rules of your religion well. If someone tells me that you're a good person then I know that you are all around good and not just in the area of your religion.

Being a good Christian, IS being a good person. But if we are bound by certain rules, laws, regulations, that may interfere with being a "good person" in general, one must supersede the other. Unfortunately I do not have an example of what that might be. Frankly, I would rather be a good person, not backed into a religious corner.

If one is being a good Christian in the TRUE sense of the word, then they would also be a good person. Sadly, we Christians often fail in that area, as being a Christian doesn't mean we claim to be perfect - only that we are trying to be our best.
