you can actually become anemic (low red blood cell counts) from a deficiency in 3 substances:
1. Iron
2. Vitamin B12 (aka cyanocobalamin)
3. Folic Acid

most people with vitamin B12 defenciency actually receive enough dietary intake but lack the intrinsic factor in the stomach which is required for absorption of orally ingested vitamin B12. If you lack intrinisic factor, you must supplement with it (requires Rx in USA) or by-pass the GI tract using injections (Rx) or sublingual products.

If you have a specific deficiency, it should be addressed with a specific replacement. Barring that, you're wasting your time and money. By the way, if you have pernicious anemia (B12 deficiency anemia), you'll have to be prescribed injectable B12, since all the B12 in the world by mouth will not be absorbed in the absence of intrinsic factor.

Iron. You need iron and to eat liver.

The brand really doesn't matter. You could research it at Consumer Reports online if you want.

btw - iron will turn your stool black and an odd consistency - it's normal, pay it no attention.
