75W140 is what a 2001 Ford Explorer calls for in the workshop manual, but 80W90 is acceptable. If it is roaring, you are due for a rear end overhaul.

Best is the old type 90W, but if the roaring noise is driving at steady speeds, and coasting, too late, need to change bearings

80-90 gear oil. or what ever your manual recommends, but usually 80-90 weight gear oil is what you use.
