The boy's name Jonathan \j(o)-na-than\ is pronounced JAHN-a-thun. It is of Hebrew origin, and its meaning is "gift of God". Related to Nathan. Biblical: the son of King Saul, Jonathan was noted for his manliness, generosity, and unselfishness. He saved David's life when Saul would have killed him.

The boy's name David \d(a)-vid\ is pronounced DAY-vid. It is of Hebrew origin, and its meaning is "beloved". Biblical: one of the most remarkable personalities in the Scriptures. David was a shepherd, musician, poet, soldier, statesman, prophet, and king. He wrote about half of the Psalms and very likely composed music for them as well. He is the only David mentioned in the Bible; his name occurs there more than a thousand times. Today there are variants of the name in almost every language group.

I don't know the hebrew meanings, but if you go to a baby name website you can find them easily.

Jonathan and David were best friends. Jonathan was much older and the son of King Saul, who David succeeded as the heir to the throne of Israel after it was clear that Saul had lost God's favor due to his disobedience and prideful attitude.

They were both faithful servants of God who were humble and meek- Jonathan accepted the fact that David was to be king, even though he was the blood heir to the throne. Truly a friend in all seasons. :0)

Jonathan was one of the most noble characters in the Bible. He refused to let personal ambition come between his love and admiration for David, whom God had appointed to succeed Jonathan's father Saul as King of Israel.
Read I Samuel chapters 13,14,18,19,20
