You should probably start slowly with some walking first, just to get back into the swing of things.

Check out SparkPeople.com and start using their free tools for tracking your eating, exercising and weight loss goals. I've been using it for a few months now and I've managed to lose 30lbs wiht no gimicks, just paying attention to the food I'm eating.

I don't have the perfect answer....but I have two things to say.
First about your question...swimming is the best exercise to get you started...cause if you're even a bit overweight you'll put your knees to the test!
I've had knee surgery and docs told me I should forget any other exercise until I lose some extra pounds I used to carry...
I lost my pounds by swimming and eating healthy...now I have a treadmill and I can run as much as I want.
Don't put your bones under pressure...they don't like it:-)
Second...I have to say this cause I've had enough...
I keep reading rude answers or even questions about people who have a few or a lot of extra pounds...it's extremely annoying and I know that me saying it isn't gonna make any difference but pleeeaaaase stop it guys!
Who are you trying to help? The person you're being rude to,or yourselves to feel a bit better?
Have you ever thought that a "big" person may have a much better and happier life than you?...Or is this the exact thought that makes you mean?
I'm sorry about my outburst but enough is enough!
Good luck with the marathon!:-)

Perhaps you should start with brisk walking first and build up to running or jogging.
but if you want to run a marathon, then running would be a good idea!!
As for losing weight, I've been going to slimming world (UK) and have found it a good healthy way of eating and losing weight. That will work well in combination with the exercise.
Good luck

Obviously if you want to run a half marathon you will have to do some jogging, but i would suggest starting with cycling and swimming as these, combined with a sensible diet, should help get you in shape.
Please remember though at our age (I'm 53 too) pulls & strains take a bit longer to heal so take it easy to start with.
It is also recomended if you haven't trained for a while to get a checkup from your GP just as a precaution

find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
dont try to lose more than 1-2lbs a week - its not healthy to lose more.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried - no junk food.
