how did you come to this number?

you could speak fluently with some 1500 words.

with 4000 you would sound native like.

While you could use some memorisation technique to learn many words in a short time, this will not convert to fluency. You must learn the words in meaningful context in order to be able to use them.

It is not impossible, but very hard. I am a native Spanish speaker, but I don't believe I know 4000 words, at least I don't think. But it is possible you could get a good grasp of the language. If you learn the basics and the rules of conjugating, you'll be able to use more words. It is better to learn a language over time, otherwise you'll probably forget most of what you learn in a short amount of time. But in any case, Good luck!

That depends on yourself entirely. I'd learn 400 or 500 words of French on a good day.

A fast method to learn words is to write them all on cards with the translation on the back.

You go through the words...the ones you know are taken out...the ones you don't know are repeated untill you know them too. You could try a set of 50 or 100 words and when you're done it may be best to do something else..such as substract 7 from 100 untill you're down to zero, but if you feel that doesn't improve results just stick to the cards.

Good luck with the exam.

4,000 words in three weeks? That's 190+ a day? No, not unless you're a savant or something.

Get cassettes, eat well, and the night before go to bed early - the more rested you are, the better off you'll be.

And if there's a part that requires you to listen, just listen - if you KNOW the words, they will translate in your head, don't try to translate each word as they come because you won't pay attention to the rest of the sentence.

Yeah, I'll bet it could be done, but only under two conditions: you'd have to seriously want to do it and you'd have to be in a Spanish speaking environment in a desperate situation. Try living with a Spanish family for 3 weeks, making them swear (in Spanish of course!) that they won't speak a word of English to you. No cheating on your part. They aren't to give you food, water, or info of any kind, unless you ask in Spanish, and you can't leave their home. You have to answer the phone (in Sp.) and cook and clean up and read bedtime strories = in other word, immerse yourself in daily life totally. Good luck.
