They say that a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. With that said, there is no job more important than another on pit road. The crew chief, who is in constant communication with the driver, has to convey information to the rest of the pit crew. The tire changers have to get 5 off and 5 on (TWICE) just as fast as they could go (boy, don't we all wish that we could get 4 tires and gas in 13.4 seconds?). The tire carrier can't drop the ball, either. The gas man and catch can man are important, because a driver can't get around the track on his good looks.
All jobs are important.

Each person has a very important job on pit road. It's pretty equal if you ask me. If the gas can man doesn't get all the fuel in the tank, car might run out of gas, or if he doesn't grab the overflow can before the car leaves the pits, the car must make another pass on pit lane, and chances are the car will go a lap down. An obstacle that is very difficult to overcome.
If the jack man doesn't raise the car quickly the tires can't be changed, losing precious seconds. Or if the jack man lowers the car before all the lugs are properly tightened, the driver may think that servicing is finished and take off too early.
The tire men, must be quick, and evenly timed when removing a wheel. A car can only leave as quickly as the slowest tire man gets his work done. Missing one lug nut can spell disaster for the race team. One mistake by any member of the pit crew can be the difference between winning the race, and coming in 20th.

No one is more important than the other one on a pit crew. If one person messes up...that messes up the entire team. Every single member of the pit crew is greatly needed.

The crew chief is the most important because they determine when and how many tires the car gets, how much down force wind how much tire pressure and when the car pits and how much to adjust the suspension.

The only piece that you cannot complete a pit stop without is a driver. You can remove every other team member and still complete a pit stop. Yes, it would take longer, but it would still be completed.

The answer is obvious.EVERYONE.You can't drive a car without wheels or without gas and no one will know how much gas or how much wheels or adjustments to the wedge etc. without the crew chief.
