Are you asking what it is? I work in a school for mentally disturbed children. I am a member of the Behavior Support Staff (BSS) Self harm can be something as simple as biting your fingers to picking at your skin or as serious as banging your head off the wall to cutting yourself. Either way it doesn't really matter it is all considered very serious and in the facility where I work there is a No-Tolerance Policy; if the child does not stop on his own after a verbal warning the child will be placed in the least restrictive restraint until the behavior is no longer an issue.

I am/was a victim of self-harming. I wear the label "cutter" for the rest of my life when I look at the scars on my arms. I did this in my late teens early twenty's because of depression and anger. I never really thought of suicide so I just cut myself or burned myself with lighters and in some cases my cars cigarette lighter.
All that is gone now, I am a happy go lucky guy that is 30 and very optimistic about life. But I do get ashamed when people ask me what happened to my arms. Why are there so many scars and what looks like burns? I can't explain it to them that I was a cutter because people don't understand who a cutter is or what causes it. I wish I used some other outlet for my pain, poetry, sports maybe?
I will always tell anyone to try something more positive. Go for a 3 mile run as fast as you can until you nearly collapse or something to that affect. And the best way is to just talk to someone who will listen and understand what you're going through. Trust me there are alot of us out there, just look, you 've all just met one :-)

The Mind website is an excellent source of information, the links are only suggestions, have a look around for anything more specific that you may need to know.
Self harm is more common than most people realise, and it is usually a way for the person to cope with feelings and emotions that they have no other way of expressing.
If you need help then try and talk to your GP, but you can also use this link
http://www.mind.org.uk/Mind+in+your+area/
to see if there is a local Mind association in your area. They are more informal than the health service, and easy to access, all you need to do is make a phone call. They can help and support people in a whole range of ways.
There is help available if you know where to look for it.
Good luck and take care

Self harming is intentionally causing harm to your body.
There are many ways to inflict pain on yourself. Cutting is most popular in females.
I was a self harmer 7 years ago and I still carry the scars from back then. Therapy is a lot better to help take your anger, lonliness and sadness away.

more specific??
if YOU are harming yourself, get help!! I'm not just saying this, i know a person that used to cut themselves. they completely regret it not because of all the scars and lost time and stuff. not that they are on medication and got help, they feel much better and dont hurt themselves. I know it's hard, but it's the best thing, really...Good Luck!!
