Because they don't like it and they want you to do that.

It's instinct - bellies are one of their most vulnerable points, they don't like them being touched. Even an otherwise completely sweet cat might not like his/her belly being touched.

My dad once claimed my cat must be hurt or something because she attacked him when he stroked her tummy. In 18 years of owning this cat, he had failed to notice she didn't like her belly touched. Except by me of course :-)

When I come home from work, my boy is so happy to see me that he rolls onto his back and lets me rub his belly all over.. until he's tired of it, then it's instant attack! Like he's telling me "that's enough now, Mom." Most cats don't like much if any belly rubbing, so you should feel privileged if your cat lets you do it at all. He's at his most vulnerable then.

Vulnerability, stimulation, etc...

My male cat used to bite when we rubbed his stomach. Our vet said it could be stimulating to him and that when they mate their stomachs come in contact with the females back and rub on it.

Not sure why females would do it other than the vulnerability thing.

animal bellies are very vulnerable parts of their bodies. unless the animal trusts you, they get kind of wary about being touched there. a predator slashes the gut to get to the gooey innards.

Their belly is there sensitive bit and if you touch it they may feel vulnerable and thats why they grab your hand. It's an instinct they have.

They do this because you are unsettling them......if they are laying peacefully and you do this what do you expect, at the end of the day they are just trying to defend them selves.
