Very much so.
That some people make personal choices does not statistically undo the major influences of culture and location.
Even within the USA for Christian denominations, for example: (see maps)

I'm a Christian but I've always felt Islam is a valid and related relation, although we have our doctinal differences. But I do get the impression the Prophet intended it for the Arab people. Knowledge of the one true God must perhaps be presented in different ways to different cultures. They still expand beyond the intended (arguably intended) perimeters; you have African Christians and Muslims, for example. But when that happens it seems to breed conflict. The jews rejected Christ,so I've always felt His task was to bring worship of the God of Abraham to the European heathens; the Prophet worked with the people of the mideast, mostly Arab, some Turkic. Islam has not gotten along well with Hinduism. I would agree, only the association with geography is only partially the right way to look at it. I would say culture, not geography.

I agree, and I think it's because most people are indoctrinated into their religion from childhood. It's not really as if all religions are presented with equal time or discussion when the person is old enough to decide.

People do change their minds of course... but that means running against the current in most cases.

It was originally determined by geography. But as the world awakens to the idea of religious freedom and globalization, I suppose that we will see more religious diversity in every country of the world, as we already do in the U.S. and Western Europe.

In many of the backward countries of the world we have larger proportions of a single religious faith, such as Shiite Islam in Iran and Sunni Islam in Saudi Arabia. At least part of this stems from religious intolerance. In Iran, religious converts from Islam can be put to death. That's why 99% of the population is Muslim.

Of course! Religion is mostly passed from parents to children. This is, of course, completely wrong but religious people see it as saving their children, not locking them in.
