Sometimes different medications have different effects on people. When I was on an SSRI, I felt angry all the time, angry and argumentative, and I had no hesitation in saying really mean things to people. For a while it was great, because the more depressed I was, the more I kept things to myself and just hid my thoughts. But, the anger wasn't really healthy, either, and I didn't win many friends with the things I said.
Now I'm trying an MAOI, which works pretty well for me. It doesn't make me feel happy, but I don't feel so bad all the time. Before, the closest to happiness I could hope for was a sort of contentment, but now I feel generally content most of the time instead of sad, and sometimes I even get around to being cheerful. It's not perfect, but it's better than the way things were.
Basically, they do work, but they won't make you instantly happy. Someone might do well on one thing or another, which is completely the opposite of how another person reacts, because we all have different brain chemistries. It is hard to tell what will happen, which is why it is important to pay attention and stay in communication with the prescribing doctor.
Antidepressants are not good for children under 18, though. They have a tendency to worsen symptoms!

Yes. Sometimes they have to try out a few to see which ones work as they can't open your skull and see what chemicals need to be changed.
And it often takes six months before it really begins to work, such as in Prozac.
AVOID Paxil if you can, because the rebound, while temporary, IS terrible.
There are also side effects which can go away with time as you adjust, or might not.
Try this first:
BOOK: FEELING GOOD HANDBOOK: THE NEW MOOD THERAPY
it's very effective.
Also, you can take St. John's Wart - same thing, takes six months but it's natural and over the counter.
Personally, I've seen some tremendous results first hand at Dianetics centers. Go to www.dianetics.org to see if there's one nearby.
And write me privately if you need more.

Hard question to answer. They work for many people yet some have gone through many to find one that will actually work for them. Sometimes a combination of therapy and antidepressants are the way to go.

Yes, if you want to know if they make you feel better. But they do not cure you - they cannot solve whatever has made you depressed in the first place.
