I see that there are quite a few people who don't know anything about any other religions except their own.

It's a misunderstanding due to the name. I don't think that many people are actually informed, they just assume.

Alot of Satanists worship themselves. I think some of them still worship Satan as a real entity, but that is a less modern form of Satanism from what I understand. In my opinion, alot of the effects are still the same.

People tend to create a multidimensional figure of what they create in their mind. From childhood, one already have been shown of what Satan may look in pictures, in movies and televisions. So as you grow older what you created in your mind as a child get stuck into that brain of yours.
As anyone may embrace in something to believe that belief will trigger the mind to conceive of an idea on how that something will look like. One scientist speculate that the human form in future will look frail and small with huge head and pronounced set of eyes. Illustrators had conceived of a future man according to what the scientist said. As years went by , the shape of the man look still the same and some how the feature remain in the mind and now have been attributed to aliens because they considered aliens future man or man ahead of human time in another planet.
So, Satan is the same as ourchildhood memories that will stay inour mind for as long we grow old.

Because there are very many different forms of Satanism, and although very few of them actually worship the devil there still are some out there that do.
I think you must be referring to the Anton Lavey type of Satanism, just because that is the most famous/popular form of Satanism and they don't worship Satan, doesn't mean that others don't.

I know that they do not, having read up on Satanism... but... you must admit:
If you don't want people thinking that you worship Satan, then "Satanist" is a rather misleading title. I don't think you can blame people from drawing such a sensible conclusion.
