How can that be? I thought rules were rules? How can the church just decide to do away with something like that?

Forgive me if this has been asked before...I just saw this on the news...O.O

Pastor Billy says: discover me the 1st rate Catholic rfile that lists limbo as a dogmatic doctrine. Limbo replaced into on no account an first rate doctrine it replaced into purely a concept. Secondly taking away it would not recommend anyones baptism makes no sense even with age. I recommend seem at your good judgment why end at toddlers?

It was like the concept of Santa Claus. They needed something to tell the kids who invariably ask what happens to a child who dies before he/she is baptized. We were taught this in Catholic elementary school.

Where are the souls of those unfortunate infants? Well, the church seems to have no idea, so I'm not gonna lose any sleep over it. My ideal of a merciful God would not penalize an innocent, but some twisted dogma monger centuries ago could not give us the comfort of believing that they simply go to heaven where they belong.

Now they change their tune...

Jesus said, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved." (Mark 16:15-16)

For centuries, people have wondered about children who died before they were baptized. The Bible does not explicitly state that they will go to heaven.

Limbo was suggested as the place where unbaptized babies went when they died. This idea was never official Church doctrine and has been rejected.

The Church now says that it is not sure what happens to unbaptized babies when they die but she entrusts them to the mercy of God.

With love in Christ.

Yes, it's been asked before.

Limbo was never an official teaching of the church. Many priests, lay people etc. may have taught it...and it was believed my many Catholic people...but the dogma of the Church never included Limbo. It was not official...so the Pope is only reiterating this.

Just because people believe it...even theologians...does not make it part of the dogma of the Church. So...the Pope didn't change anything...he didn't do away with anything...it was never official to start with.

The Catholic Church has not "done away with limbo." They have looked into it and determined that it is a real possibility. Before they had no official stance on the matter.

It seems that the headline of the article implies that they have "done away with it." But read the whole article.

We now have three Popes who've consecutively agreed on "Limbo"; Paul X, John Paul II, and Benedict XVI. However, none have made this *infallible*.
