I know why it is done etc, but I was wondering ;

when you go to a breeder of say, rottweilers, and they tell you they will spay/ neuter and dock the puppies tails, can you make it so they won't dock the puppy's tail [that you are buying?]
I mean, rottweilers are so beautiful with tails, not stumps. I was in Europe and I was shocked to see that they actually had tails, because in America, its much different.

I'm not really getting a rottie or any similar breed like that, but I was just wondering.

I use to have welts on my legs from that tail!!! ha ha They are thick all the way to the end and they hurt so bad when the hit you!!! Also everything was off the tables when bear entered the room!! ha ha Thanks for the great memories!! We lost him almost 5 years ago!!!

Yup, you'll find that in Europe people are much less inclined to lop of bits of an animal to suit themselves. In fact tail docking is just becoming illegal in England, unless it can be proven that the dog will be a working dog.

You can try asking a breeder to save an un-docked puppy for you, but good luck. Hopefully it's possible to find a breeder that doesn't dock tails, they must exist in America too. I suggested to some potential boxer breeders a while ago that they don't dock their puppies tails and they just said 'no'. Well HAH they haven't got a choice now.

If you go to a breeder for a puppy, when you pick it out (and presumably pay for it) you need to specify it's tail is not to be docked. Make it a part of the purchase contract if there is one. I would think you would have to pay for the puppy before you have the right to make that demand, becasue after a certain age it costs more to have the tail done and it's a bigger risk to the pup.

You'd have to ask the breeder. Tails are usually docked at 2 or 3 days old and you probably wouldn't be picking a pup out that young so the breeder may not do what you ask.
Never hurts to ask.

You could try rescue. I know ours has some Rotts with tails and they always says those are the hardest ones to adopt out. Silly.

I agree...Rotts are so expressive when they can wag their tails!

Talk to the breeder. The should care, but you will have to take that puppy no matter what when that time comes.

FYI We Had a rott/pit mix with a full tail, and everytime she wagged her tail she peed..

Yes, if you are purchasing from a breeder, before the litter is born, you can request for your pup of choice to NOT have his/her tail docked. (Helps if you already know which gender you prefer, and are not picky about the particular puppy!)

It has to be done before they are 5 days old, so that's why I mentioned ''not being picky''.

I'm sure you can request for the dog to have the tail, or; anything else. It's a preferance for the apperance of the dog.
