My 7 year old Grandson has arrived for the weekend, he has a really nasty rash raised spots, the skin is very warm to the touch, only where his underpants cover. He is not unwell in himself, I think its probably an allergy rash - washing powder probably. The thing is what can I use to eleviate and calm it down that is safe on a 7 year old, particularly in tender places?!?

Its a Friday night....no chance to speak to a doctor. I have so far given him a cool sea salt bath, and heaped on the calomine. TWICE since he arrived, he says they not only itch like mad, they hurt!

Do you have any hydrocortison cream - if so, use it sparingly. Have you tried also giving him Piriton tablet? You could ask for advice on NHS helpline - but its a long process and somewhat frustrating. Usually this no. is on your GP's answering machine. Poor child - there's nothing worse than the itches.

You can try calamine lotion (as you have) and you can see if you can buy an antihistamine medication from the chemist. In Australia you can get these types of medicines without a prescription (I'm not sure if this is the case where you are) but you can also talk with the chemist shop people about what else to do.

Sometimes there are other creams that can be soothing.

Maybe if you do a wash of his clothes in water without detergent or maybe in sorbelene it may help also.

Some paracetamol (= acetaminophen) for the pain.

Try wheat, they say it is good exthma (how's it spelt), it is good for cooling any rashes, just put it in a sock and put this sock round bath tap, then run the water through it into the bath - worth a try and it won't agitate as there is nothing in it!

What about benadryl. Just remember you can not give him oral and topical. I would try 1tsp of benadryl and let the rash air out for tonight.
