A well bred, well socialized, well trained Dane can be companions with virtually any breed/mix of dog.
I know many Danes whose companions are Chihuahuas. It is really a matter of your persoanl preference.
In my household I currently have 2 Danes (I've owned Danes for over 25 years), 2 Labs and a German Shorthaired Pointer. I also have 6 Persian Cats.
All of the dogs but one a females..all get along beautifully, but then again they are all well bred, well socialized and well trained.
I compete in obedience and Rally with my dogs as well as conformation with my Danes. One of my Danes is also a certified therapy dog.
Danes should never be aggressive.

Bison Frese. I have one and also a Doberman. It's great because he is a sturdy little dog so when they ruff house I don't have to worry so much about my little one. A Jack Russell would work out well but not everyone is a good owner for a Jack. They are very difficult to train. They also need a lot of time from the owner. The Bison does not require so much and with two dogs your Dane will be a companion to the other so that will help for both. Bison do require alot of groom time but the good thing is they do not shed. That is a huge plus for me. Good luck.

A basset hound.
One, they get along with anything. Dogs, children, adults, cats, etc.
Two, they aren't s small dog. You wouldn't have to worry about your great dane crushing the poor guy, but they aren't large. Basset hounds are heavy but not tall, any that could be a good thing because it could be a hassel having two tall dogs.
Also they arent hard to deal with. They DONT need a lot of grooming done. Yes they may sloober, but it only takes two seconds to wipe their mouth.
I have been around bassets my whole life, and would never get a different kind of dog. They are always there for you and when you're sad they clown around until you are happy.

Well first of all, about Great Danes:
Some individuals are dog-aggressive, especially with same sex dogs. It is good with other dogs if it is raised with them from puppyhood.
So hopefully your dog is very well socialized, and spay/neutered if you plan on getting another dog, and potentially of the opposite gender.
If you are wanting to get a breed similar in size, you could look at an Irish Wolfhound, or many of the Mastiff breeds.
