Depends on what the steroids are going to be used for. Allergies or as a growth hormone? There are many other alternatives that should be tried first instead of leaping right for the steroids. They have many side effects that are not good for animals, including weight gain, ravenous appetite, eventual muscle wasting, and it takes a little time to wean them off the drugs. I would consult a second vet on their opinion.

Why don't you ask your vet this? They have all the information for any drugs they prescribe, including side-effects. Generally, side effects of short term use can be excessive drinking and peeing. That's only of catabolic steroids though.

You need to ask your vet, because it depends what steroid they're using, what it's for and what the dosage is. No one on here knows these things, so you're not going to get very helpful information from here - ask the person who KNOWS! (the vet who prescribed the drugs)

one of my pugs had steroid responsive meningitis and the steroids worked very well (hence the name steroid responsive) in reducing the inflammation and symptoms. I would only do it if it was to help a serious medical condition though.

what is the specific type of steroid your doc is prescribing?

I'm a pet sitter and I have clients who have decided to give their pets steriod shots and have later regretted it because it caused cancer, loss of eyesight, severe weight loss and a whole host of problems.

I would advise against it and try to find a natural solution through a holistic vet.

I assume you are talking a cortisone class drug - put it this way they are powerful drugs that can have powerful side effects BUT if used correctly the side effect can be minimized or eliminated and they can save your dog life (and or eliminate a lotta misery.
