I know that fondue is the recent craze, but I just realized today that fondue is not the most hygenic thing to do. It's like double-dipping a chip in the dip. The same fork that goes in your mouth goes back in the community fondue pot. And how many people can really swear that their mouth never touches the fork?

Just curious if anyone has ever noticed this before.

I've never really thought about it. But then again, I never go to fondue "parties" but I have had fondue with my husband. I figure with my husband at least, at that point it doesn't really matter, does it?

The fondue fork is only for dipping in the fondue. You should then put whatever you dipped on a plate and eat it. Fondue was all the rage back in the 70s, and has resurfaced along with a lot of other retro stuff. Here is what I found on the net about Fondue Etiquette:

Aside from being a unique dining experience, fondue is the ultimate romantic meal.

Fine Living entertaining experts Michele Adams and Gia Russo (aka Migi Girls) give us the dos and don'ts of fondue etiquette:

Use your fondue fork to spread bite-sized morsel of food, then dip and swirl it into the cheese. Hold it over the sauce, allowing any excess to drip back into the pot. You can also bring your plate up under the bite to avoid dripping as well.

Avoid spreading germs by only biting onto the food.
It is improper to put the whole fork into your mouth. You can also slide the piece of food off your fondue fork onto your plate and use a dinner fork.

Never dip your food into the pot with your fingers.
Aside from the germ factor, you'll burn yourself.

A don't that actually can be an interesting do?
Traditionalists say if you drop a piece of food into the pot, you have to kiss the person next to you? now that's romantic! Make the fondue experience easy, fun, and delicious.
