I just threw some wild bird seed over my backyard lawn. How do I know that they'll come and eat them? My grandpa does it everywhere, and they always come.

Well now you'll just have a bunch of flowers and weeds in your yard. You first have to tell the birds the food is there. Try a small feeder or a plate with food on it. Once the birds know that your yard is an easy food source, then you can toss food like that. Only certain birds will eat from the ground though. Others will never eat from the ground. This is why I have a ground feeder and a hanging one.

different species prefer to eat from the ground and others prefer to eat from a feeder that is raised off the ground. I wouldn't just throw the seed in a nicely manicured lawn. Any seed not eaten will germinate to weeds.

If you have a dog and/or cat that are in the yard..the birds may not come..if they're on the ground they are very easy targets.
Hang some feeders instead.
And not all bird are ground feeders.

Put some on the sidewalk, so that they see it. Once they find it, they will find it in the grass.

Give them time. They have to figure out that they are there first.
