I started getting a tattoo on my ribcage, and after 2 and half hours, it was only halfway done because I kept moving. This is my second tattoo, and I just couldn't sit still through the pain.

My artist recommended I take pain killers, but I'm straight-edge and I'm against that idea. I heard the creams are iffy and I'd rather not do that either. Any suggestions?

I heard listening to music helps to distract, but I just can't seem to keep my body still enough to get it done.

Well im about 50% covered with tatts now and i do have one on my ribs and it wasnt fun cuz my tummy muscles kept contracting and making me move all over. my first suggestion is find a diferent tattooist cuz your not suppose to take any pain meds and he shouldnt even tell ya that. there is a numbing spray but it burns. My artist used it on me to test it out and i hated it. best thing to do is just relax and do smaller sessions, the more you do tho the less it hurts cuz it will start to go numb itself cuz your endorphins are kicking in. Take a friend with you and talk and laff dont sit and relax cuz you will just think about the pain more. Your body will still twich no matter what cuz the area its in the artist should have someone to help stretch your skin a little not stretch but like hold it in place. Worked for me so i really hope it works for you. Good luck and keep us posted im interested on how it turns out.

the fact is that ribcage tattoos are painful and 2 hours is kindof a long time to sit on a tattoo like that, especially a large one. i do most of my tattoos in 2-3 hour sessions. i have been working on my back for 13 months and have had 8 sessions, tomorrow will be my 9th. you have to listen to your body and you can only do what it will stand. part of my back tattoo extends out to my ribcage (but still on my back) and i squirmed. it was an involuntary movement and i couldn't help it. definitely don't take pain killers if you are against it. do you not even take asprin or other pain relievers? or just "drug" pain meds. whatever you decide... good luck.

A careful choice of music really might help. I've just started training to run 5km for charity (which I know isn't that far, but believe me, me and running are normally not happy bedfellows...) and music is sometimes the only thing that keeps me going through the overwhelming desire to stop and have a nice sit down.

Another suggestion, if you're getting really hung up on it - and I don't know how well this would work, but it might be worth trying - would be hypnotherapy. I mean, women can get hypnotherapy to help them with pain while they give birth, so it might work in this setting too. I'm not basing this suggestion on any particular experience, and obviously it would be an extra expense, but it might be worth looking into.

Hope this helps!

I have one on my ribcage, also. During the process the artist was tickling me and it was hard to sit still. I informed him of it and he went a little slower so I did not wiggle as much through it. Taking you mind off of it through conversation might help, bring some one along that you can talk to and wont get bored easily. Most artist will work with you, just let them know. If you are nervous or uncomfortable it will make them too. So once again communication is essential.

If you're familiar with hypnosis, then you've no doubt heard of Master Hypnotist Steve G. Jones. His book, "Ultimate Conversational Hypnosis" has been voted as the best hypnosis course ever made. The book is also available in electronic format at: http://www.hypnosistocontrol.net

If you want to get an edge in everyday communication and lead other people towards your goals this is a must read.

It's disturbing that your artist recommended you take pain killers. Your not meant to take any pain killers when you get a tattoo done, it thins the blood and makes the tattoo take longer to heal. Plus you'll bleed alot more while getting the tattoo done.

Maybe try watching a movie or listening to music. Or bring a friend to talk to so that your mind stays off of the pain.
