how long does a cat live

I just lost my girl at about 17. And will never know for sure if it was the canned food recently purchased (as a treat) that led to her death. She had always been on Purina Cat Chow. Wet food was occasional goodie to bend with dry food.

She was an indoor/outdoor cat up till the last few weeks. But of course she had her shots to protect from stray cats out in area.

Personally, I would never take a cat (rescued) that has known freedom of being in/out and force it to stay confined in a house, only seeing the outdoors through a window. My spayed cats never wander far from the yard and protection of our dog pack.

15 is a fair age, not uncommon to meet 18, 19 year old cats. They can live into their twenties, I've met a couple. The oldest cat I've yet met was 25. I think the oldest cat in the world was 36 or something. I'd be disappointed if my cat didn't make it to 15 anyway.

And by the way, that stuff about outdoor cats living shorter lives is, as far as I know, unfounded. All the oldest cats I've ever met have been outdoor cats - it depends what sort of area you live in.

Lei - maybe we should never allow humans outside, then our lifespan would increase too. I think it has more to do with advances in husbandry and nutrition to be honest.

I know indoor cats that have regular vet check ups and annual shots can live to be 20+ years. It really depends on diet, environment, etc. an average outdoor cat can have a much shorter shorter life span. This is the chart for comparison to human years. It's interesting how different it is.
cats's age Human years
1 month 6-8 months
3 months 4 years
6 months 10 years
8 months 15 years
1 year 18 years
2 years 24 years
4 years 35 years
6 years 42 years
8 years 50 years
10 years 60 years
12 years 70 years
14 years 80 years
16 years 84 years

Average life span for a cat is about 15 yrs. but most are now making it to 17 or 19 yrs old, this of course is for indoor cats. Outdoor cats average 11 to 12 yrs.

They live about as long as dogs, 10 to 15 years. Although I have heard of cats living up to 20 years. It depends on how well you care for the cat and the general health of the cat. Purebred cats usually don't live as long as mixed breeds due to inbreeding, genetic mutations and tendancy towards inherited diseases.

My cat died on her 18th birthday. I am told that was pretty good for a Persian.

She was an outdoor cat a lot of the time. Hated being kept inside.
