My 14 year old daughter was caught shoplifting with 2 other friends last night. The police came and hand cuffed them and took them to the police station. They were offered a program for first time offense and would not be charged this time. My question is, what further punishment should I do??

I already have taken action and grounded my daughter. I was simply asking how others would handle the same situation. I already told her she couldn't hang with those 2 girls anymore and have set other ground rules. Thank you to all that have responded.

If you really don't know the answer. Don't ask a complete stranger if you should, or how should you discipline your children.

I think getting handcuffed and taken to the police station was probably pretty traumatic, but you definitely need to impose some kind of punishment of your own. I absolutely would not allow her to hang out with the 2 girls she was with EVER again, for one. Being grounded to the house and loss of her phone is also an advisable one, since you don't want her holed up in her room calling the girls who got her into trouble.

That's up to you. Keep in mind if you do punish her you're sending a message that such behavior will not be tolerated.
Don't get carried away, but do you really want her hanging around with the other 2
kids??????????.
If it were my daughter, I;'d simply tell her, you don't hang around with these 2 "friends". If you do, your cell phone goes, you are restricted on weekends, and no internet.
With friends like that she doesn't need enemies.
You're going to have to be a parent, even though she may not likeit one bit.
Q. What's the easiest way to stay out of trouble.
A. Stay away from trouble.

I think grounding her for a month at least is the least you can do. Take away her phone and computer. Leave her a TV and radio and her school work. This will be just as hard on you as it is on her, so be ready. I would also take away her allowance (save it for her and give it to her only if she is good about accepting the punishment). She will then understand that good behavior is its own reward.

Aside from what has already been answered as far as grounding and keeping her away from the other girls, and assuming she already dosent play a sport, talk to her and see if theres any sport she is at all interested in trying, it may sound over simplified but athletics have saved many a soul.

Ground her for at least a month. Take away her phone, TV, whatever else she values greatly that she can physically survive without. She'll be mad now, but she'll never shoplift again.

well take the phone, tv, computer, game system, radio, take her to confession. have her do extra chores, she can not hang out with her friends that she shop lifted with 30 days should give her enough time to understand that what she did was wrong and she will most likely never do it again.

If that Program involves some kind of community service, then that hopefully should be enough to prevent further thievery.

If she were mine she would be in just as much trouble at home. But I would atleast ground her until she finish's the program are something.
