Since practically all the important features of the legendary life story of "Jesus" don't come from Jesus' actual life story, but represent pagan accretions grafted on to the bare-bones tale of a Jewish upstart executed by the Romans for sedition - of which there were actually several around the time of Jesus - it needn't necessarily have mattered. In fact, Christianity exists today because of a series of historical circumstances that occured centuries after his death. It's a near miss that we aren't all Mithraists.

This question has been debated for hundreds of years.
Don Scotus believed that Christ's whole life from His conception to his death was an act of salvation for us.
Thomas Aquinas who believed in the literal interpretation of Genesis and the Adam and Eve story with original sin, believed that Christ had to die on the cross to please God.
Aquinas' argument won out and became the basis of theology books and training .
Today scholars and theologians are giving another look at Don Scotus and believe that God did not demand human sacrifice. This way of belief is more in line with Jesus' telling us that God is a loving parent.

Since Jesus apparently knew about it all along, he'd have given himself up. And slapped Judas about like a red-headed stepchild for not doing his job.

Jesus gave himself up basically.
He said to Judas, "what you do, do quickly". And off Judas went and brought back the roman guards.
He gave himself willingly. As a Ransom for all.

Jesus says regarding his arrest in Mark 14:49, "Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled."

lol, what if? It was prophesied in the Old Testament that the son man would die. Besides that Jesus didn't exactly RUN from the Romans. lol

Hypotheticals really don't work here. Jesus was going to die the way He did. I guess I don't see the point of "what if" games.
