I am using my sony digital camera for pics of some small jewelry items. 1)How do i best take closeups without the pic getting blurry when i zoom in?2) I think there are some free softwares i can use to later enhance the quality of the pics. Any ideas?

To knock out the blurriness, choose the "little flower" setting on the camera when you take the picture - this is meant for close-ups.

For editing, I like Photoshop for the vast possibilities and ease. (Yes, it takes a bit longer to learn everything, but that's because there is so many cool things you can do). There are free tutorials all over the web.

Light the items well. Use a tripod. Use a small aperature like f16 or f22 for best depth of field. Focus on the front of the item rather than the back. Crop and sharpen with your photo editing software.

Don't use auto - it's great for most situations but it's probably causing you problems with this one.
