I'd suggest the Canon 17-85mm for the 400D. That's a great lens and you can get it for a very nice price as a kit with the 400D.
For the D80, I'd simply get the kit lens Nikon 18-135mm. I used to favor the Nikon 18-70 (same price, bit better image quality) but the 18-125mm has enough zoom range to stay on your camera full time. If you're very discerning this is a lens that you'll want to upgrade in time.

I'm guessing you're deciding between a Canon 400D and Nikon D80 and want to know what kit lens to compare them with?

The smart-*** answer is, "the best lens you can afford." But there's some serious truth there; what's your budget and what do you expect to be taking pictures of? A lens to take pictures of your friends is a lot different from needing something to do sports photography for the cover of Sports Illustrated!
