seriously, she set her baby in a river. she didnt plan for anyone to find him, he just got lucky, if that happened. are we missing the whole point of the story, the unwanted cast away (attempted drowning) comes to lead his people to freedom? sounds much better.

Read the account again. His mother left his oldest sibling (Mirian) to keep an eye on the basket hidden in the reeds. She was required at that time to work daily in the fields. Her daughter was not. Her intend was to hide him by day and recover him by night. Otherwise why leave someone to guard him?

Moses did not "get lucky". He was exacty where God needed him to be, thanks to the wise actions of his mother and sister.

I address that question in my new book .

The background is not actually known to the reader in this day and age, but was to the reader back then during the Great Famine. Food was hard to come by. Disease, starvation, and lootings were common. Mom couldn't care for the child, so she hoped someone else would.

The same story is told about Sargon I. Joseph Campbell descibes the tale as a "cosmic myth." In my book I explain exactly where in the heavens that story is told.

Sorry about the spam.

Apparently you haven't read the story for yourself.

Moses' mother saved his life. Exodus 1:16 then he (pharaoh) said, "When you are helping the Hebrew women to give birth and see them upon the birthstool, if it is a son, then you shall put him to death."

Moses' mother hid him for the first 3 months (TO SAVE HIS LIFE) she then made him a wicker basket and covered it with tar and pitch (to make it water proof), and set it in the Nile. Moses' sister Miriam stood at a distance to see what happened. After the Pharaoh's daughter found Moses, she "hired" his Mom to nurse him.

It was a great act of sacrificial love that she gave her son up so that he would not be murdered.

She set him in the river that led right to the pool that Pharaoh"s daughter was in at the time.

The Birth of Moses
1 Now a man of the house of Levi married a Levite woman, 2 and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months. 3 But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. 4 His sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him.
5 Then Pharaoh's daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking along the river bank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her slave girl to get it.

Ha ha... no! The Pharoah had decreed that all newborn Hebrew males were to be killed, and Moses' mom knew that setting him upon the river was the only way to save him. She had kept him as long as she could, then she finally decided to set him toward the royalty, sending his older sister to watch out for him and praying to God for his fate.

Have you even read the story of Moses? I think not because if you did you would know that his mother wasn't casting him away or trying to drown him -- she was attempting to save his life.

Please make sure you know the facts before you start making wild accusations of attempted murder.

Keep in mind she was trying to save him from being murdered with all the other babies in the first place. And she did send her daughter (Moses' older sister) to watch the basket to make sure he stayed safe.

This question struck a nerve with me because my wife and I adopted our son. Contrary to popular belief, women do not place their children for adoption because they do not want or do not love them. Quite the contrary, birthmothers of adopted children love their children very much but for one reason or another cannot care for their children.
